Thread Tensile Stress Area Calculator
Calculate the tensile stress area (As) for metric and unified inch threads per ISO 898 / ASME B1.1. The stress area is essential for computing bolt tensile strength, proof load, and tightening torque.

Formula & Standards
Tensile Stress Area (ISO 898 / ASME B1.1):
As = (π / 4) × (d − 0.9382 × P)²
Where:
- d = Nominal (major) diameter of bolt thread (mm)
- P = Thread pitch (mm); for inch threads, P = 25.4 / TPI
- 0.9382 = Coefficient derived from H/6 + H/4, where H = 0.866025 × P (60° thread profile)
Reference: ISO 898-1:2013, ASME B1.1-2019. This area is used to calculate proof loads and tensile strengths (F = As × σ). For shear stress area of threads, separate calculation per ISO 898-2 applies.
